Do you know basically what your web site is about. Do you also understand your audience. If the answer is yes, it's time to reach a conclusion on what you are trying to tell your audience. What is the message or messages are you striving to deliver?
Step one is to find someplace quiet and think then write down your thoughts. A good place is a library, although a conference room will do if it’s quite and convenient.
The idea is to stay away from a computer; no Internet access, no email, no terminals, no keyboards. Nothing. It has nothing to do with the Internet or computers. It is much easier to think without distractions in a busy workplace.
Think about what you are trying to deliver. This is the most important parts of the creation process. Your web site will just come together by itself if you do it right. If you short cut this step you may find yourself making untold changes over an extended period of time.
Start by stating general terms and work your way to the specifics. You may start putting together an outline or list. This is a thinking process, just jot down whatever you feel is significant in an organized a manner. You are getting your thoughts organized and writing them down the design process comes later.
You will wind up with a list of things that are key to what the web site conveys to the customer. Give people some information that makes the site important to them. The site must give people something of value or they will not stay on your site, they will not recommend to anyone else and they will not come back. This is important regardless of whether or not the site is for business.
How you are going to communicate your messages? You are not creating the web site or it's contents at this time you are defining borders. Think a little about graphics, sounds and other multimedia at this point. You may want to include charts and pictures, along with your descriptions of products and services. You may also want to include video or sounds to communicate better.
What you want to discuss on your site? If you are selling a product or service, how are you going to tie it to your site? How detailed do you want to get? Always tie your decisions to your audience and to your goals. Keep unrelated items off your list, they will confuse the creation process
Write down your thoughts and organize them as completely as time allows. Repeat this several times over several days. Do this as often as necessary until it just feels like it's done. This process for a average web site should only take a few afternoons. It is defining in general what you want communicated. The specifics come later.
You
will find that the remainder of the web site design will go much
easier.
